Moving House Checklist: What to Do and When

With a history of serving since 2013, we come to you with years of valuable moving experience.

Quick answer

The easiest way to move house is to do the right jobs at the right time. Two months out, book your mover and start decluttering. One month out, sort your address changes and insurance. In the last fortnight, pack in earnest. In the final week, confirm the van and pack an essentials bag. This checklist walks you through it, step by step, so nothing gets left to the last minute.

Moving house is a big job, but it's far easier when you tackle it in order. Here's a simple checklist that runs from two months before your move right through to your first day in the new place. Work through it at your own pace and tick things off as you go.

Moving house checklist: common questions

Quick, honest answers.

About two months before is ideal. That's when to book your mover, start decluttering and get to know the new area. Leaving it later still works, you'll just have more to do in the final couple of weeks.

As soon as you know your date, ideally a few weeks ahead. Popular dates, like the end of the month and Fridays, book up fast. If you're short on time, call us and we'll tell you what's free.

The main ones are HMRC, your council, the DVLA, your bank, your GP and your employer. Set up Royal Mail redirection too, so anything you miss still reaches you.

Documents, cards, medication, chargers, a change of clothes, toiletries, toilet roll, and the makings of a cup of tea. Keep it with you rather than on the van, so you're sorted for the first night.

Yes. Take gas, electric and water readings at both homes on the day, and photograph them. It saves arguments over bills later.
