London charges and parking, explained simply

ULEZ, Congestion Charge and Parking for London Moves

With a history of serving since 2013, we come to you with years of valuable moving experience.

Quick answer

Three things can affect a London move: the ULEZ (a £12.50 daily charge for older, non-compliant vehicles, across every borough), the Congestion Charge (a daily charge in central London that applies to almost all vehicles), and parking (permit streets, red routes and booking a bay for the van). Most modern removal vans meet the ULEZ standard, so there's often no ULEZ charge. Where any charge does apply, we put it in your written quote first. Call 07713 199 263.

Moving in London means dealing with a few road charges and parking rules on top of the move itself. It sounds fiddly, but it's normal work for a man with a van. Here's what each one is, when it applies, and how we handle it, so there are no surprises on the day.

The three things at a glance

  • ULEZ – £12.50 a day, older vehicles, every borough.
  • Congestion Charge – central London, most vehicles, set times.
  • Parking – permit streets, red routes and van bays.

Whatever the charges, we work them out and show them on your written quote before you book.

The ULEZ, in plain terms

What it is and whether it affects your move.

The Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) is run by Transport for London. If a vehicle doesn't meet the emission standard, the driver pays a £12.50 daily charge to drive in the zone. Since August 2023 the zone covers every London borough, so it now reaches the whole city, not just the centre.

It runs 24 hours a day, every day except Christmas Day. The charge is based on the vehicle's emissions, not its age, and you can check any vehicle on the TfL website using its registration.

The good news for your move: most modern removal vans already meet the ULEZ standard, so there's usually no ULEZ charge at all. If a charge does apply to your job, we tell you up front and put it in the quote.

ULEZ quick facts

  • Charge: £12.50 a day for non-compliant vehicles.
  • Where: all 32 boroughs and the City.
  • When: 24 hours, every day bar Christmas Day.
  • Check your vehicle on the TfL site by registration.

The Congestion Charge

A separate charge for central London.

The Congestion Charge is a different thing from the ULEZ, and you can pay both on the same day if your move goes through the middle of town. It covers central London only, inside the Inner Ring Road.

Unlike the ULEZ, it applies to almost all vehicles, whatever their emissions. The daily charge is currently around £15, but rates can change, so we always check the latest on TfL and confirm the exact figure in your quote.

It runs at set times, on weekdays and for part of the weekend, with a break over Christmas and New Year. If your move starts, ends or passes through the centre, we build the right charge into the price.

Congestion Charge quick facts

  • Where: central London, inside the Inner Ring Road.
  • Who: nearly all vehicles, whatever the emissions.
  • Charge: around £15 a day (check TfL for the latest).
  • Separate from the ULEZ, so both can apply.

What about bigger vans? The LEZ

London also has a Low Emission Zone (LEZ) for heavier vehicles, mainly lorries and vans over 3.5 tonnes. Most man and van jobs use vehicles under that weight, so the LEZ rarely comes into it. If your move needs a larger vehicle, we'll check whether it applies and tell you before you book.

Most modern removal vans meet the ULEZ standard, so there's often no ULEZ charge at all.

Parking for a London move

The bit people forget, and the bit we sort for you.

Permit streets and CPZs

Lots of London sits in Controlled Parking Zones, where bays are for permit holders at certain times. For a move, we check what's allowed outside the property so the van isn't left somewhere it shouldn't be.

Red routes

Red routes are the red-lined main roads where you can't stop at all. If the property is on one, we plan where the van can safely load instead, so the move isn't held up or fined.

Booking a bay suspension

For a bigger move, the council can suspend a parking bay so the van can get right outside. Some boroughs want a few days' notice and charge a fee, so it's worth telling us early and we'll arrange it.

A long carry

If the nearest legal spot is a way from the door, that's a long carry, and it adds time. We'd rather know up front so we bring enough hands and give you a fair, realistic price.

How we handle all this for you

You don't have to work any of it out. That's our job.

  • We check whether the ULEZ or Congestion Charge applies to your route, and put any charge in the written quote.
  • We look at the parking at both ends before the day, not on the doorstep.
  • Where a bay suspension helps, we tell you what the council needs and arrange it.
  • We plan around red routes and permit streets so nothing holds the move up.
  • You get one clear price in writing, with the charges shown, and no surprises later.

London charges and parking: common questions

Quick, honest answers before your move.

Usually not. Most modern removal vans already meet the ULEZ standard, so there's no charge. If a job does need a vehicle that isn't compliant, the ULEZ is £12.50 a day, and we'd show that in your written quote rather than spring it on you.

The ULEZ is about emissions and covers every borough, so only older, non-compliant vehicles pay. The Congestion Charge is about traffic in central London and applies to almost all vehicles, whatever their emissions. They're separate, so on a central move you can pay both on the same day.

It's currently around £15 a day for central London, but the rate can change, so we always check the latest on TfL and confirm the exact figure in your quote. It only applies if your move starts, ends or passes through the central zone.

We'll get as close as the rules allow. On permit streets and red routes that isn't always right outside, so for bigger moves we can arrange a bay suspension with the council. Tell us the address early and we'll sort the parking before the day.

It's when the council reserves a parking bay for your move, so the van can get right outside. It helps for bigger jobs or busy streets. Some boroughs need a few days' notice and charge a fee, so let us know early and we'll arrange it if it's worth it.

No. Any charge that applies is worked out and shown in your written quote before you book, so the price you agree is the price you pay.
