A simple guide to packing boxes
Quick answer
For most moves you'll want small boxes for heavy things like books, medium boxes for everyday items, large boxes for light bulky things like bedding, and a few wardrobe boxes for hanging clothes. Good double-walled boxes cost around £2.50 to £3 each, less in a kit. A one-bed home needs roughly 15 to 25 boxes. We can bring boxes and pack for you as part of your move.
Choosing the right moving boxes sounds like a small thing, but it makes packing day far easier and keeps your things safe in the van. This guide covers which boxes suit each room, the box types, what they cost and where to buy them. And if you'd rather not, your man with a van can bring boxes and do the packing for you.

A quick room-by-room guide so nothing gets squashed or split.
Medium boxes for clothes, bedding and personal bits. Wardrobe boxes keep hanging clothes on their hangers.
Small to medium, and strong. Plates, glasses and pans get heavy fast, so don't go big here.
Large boxes for lamps, cushions and light, bulky things. Use picture boxes for framed art and mirrors.
Small or medium boxes for toiletries and towels. Seal any bottles so nothing leaks in transit.
Always small boxes. A big box of books is too heavy to lift safely and the bottom can give way.
Tall wardrobe boxes with a rail, so shirts and coats go straight from the rail to the box and back.

It's worth getting a few more than you think. Spare boxes are easy to flatten and pass on, and running short on packing day is a pain.
Good double-walled boxes cost around £2.50 to £3 each on their own. A moving kit, with a mix of sizes plus tape and bubble wrap, usually works out cheaper per box.
Supermarkets sometimes give away free boxes, but they're often thin and odd sizes, so they can split under weight or waste space in the van. For a full move, proper removals-standard boxes are worth it.
